KIC Radio has been recognised for its outstanding contribution to student development after receiving the Employer Contribution Award at this year’s Walsall College STAR Awards.
The annual celebration, held at Walsall College, shines a spotlight on the academic, professional, and personal achievements of students across the institution’s diverse faculties and programmes. The 2026 ceremony once again highlighted the depth of talent across the borough, with students taking centre stage - not only as award nominees but also as entertainers and hosts of the evening.
Recognising Meaningful Industry Partnerships
KIC Radio’s award reflects a year of impactful work supporting T-Level media students through high-quality industry placements. Over the past 12 months, the station has offered students practical, hands-on opportunities designed to enhance their professional skills and prepare them for careers in media.
The nomination, submitted by Samantha Ray, praised the organisation’s commitment to student success:
“KIC Radio has been nominated for its outstanding support of Walsall College’s T Level media students through the provision of high-quality placement opportunities and enriching industry experiences. Their flexibility and support, focused on students, has enabled learners to successfully complete placement requirements while developing valuable skills in communication, teamwork, and live media production.”
The citation also highlighted KIC Radio’s broader initiatives including summer boot camps, mentoring schemes, and youth-focused projects which have helped students build confidence and gain valuable real-world experience. These programmes have enabled participants not only to meet their course requirements but to actively contribute to community-based media work.
Celebrating Student Talent
The STAR Awards themselves served as a vibrant showcase of student talent across Walsall College. Attendees were treated to live musical performances and professionally prepared catering, both delivered by students. The evening underscored the college’s commitment to nurturing creativity and practical skills, giving learners a platform to demonstrate their abilities in a real-world setting.
The event brought together staff, students, and industry partners, reinforcing the importance of collaboration between education providers and local organisations in supporting the next generation.
KIC Radio Representatives Attend Ceremony
Representing KIC Radio at the awards were Benjamin Williams, Station Manager, and Molly Strafford, a volunteer with the station. Their presence marked the strong relationship between the organisation and the college, built through ongoing partnership and shared dedication to student development.
Speaking after receiving the award, Benjamin Williams emphasised the vital role students play in the partnership:
“The strength of the partnership between KIC and Walsall College is really glued together by the fantastic students who volunteer and undertake their work placements with us - strengthened by the support both Samantha and I offer them.”
He also looked ahead to future collaboration, adding:
“I look forward to exploring how we can work together in the future to provide bigger and better opportunities to students across Walsall and the wider community.”
Building Pathways for the Future
KIC Radio’s success at the STAR Awards highlights the growing importance of employer engagement in education - particularly within vocational pathways such as T-Levels. By bridging the gap between classroom learning and industry practice, partnerships like this provide students with the experience and confidence needed to succeed in competitive fields.
As Walsall College continues to celebrate student achievement, initiatives such as these ensure that learners are not only recognised for their accomplishments but are also equipped with the tools to thrive beyond education.
With plans to expand opportunities in the future, both KIC Radio and Walsall College remain committed to strengthening their collaboration - ensuring even greater prospects for young people across Walsall and the wider community.
