A young filmmaker aged 17 from Aldridge is gaining recognition after producing a powerful short film aimed at raising awareness of knife crime among young people.
Molly Strafford has written and produced a short film entitled Switchblade, a film that explores the serious consequences of knife crime and its impact on individuals and communities.
The film, inspired by the story of James Brindley who aged 26 was stabbed and killed near his home in Aldridge (2017), depicts an altercation between two students ending in one of them being fatally stabbed.
The project has been supported by the James Brindley Foundation, KIC Radio, Aldridge School, and UK Door Systems bringing together students from schools and colleges to take part both in front of and behind the camera. The film is inspired by real-life issues affecting young people today and seeks to encourage reflection and informed decision-making.
Speaking about the project, Molly said “After Tom Cryan from Aldridge Youth Theatre saw a previous film I had created, he suggested working with The James Brindley Foundation. This project meant a lot to me to support families who are dealing with knife crime; just like the Brindleys.”
Switchblade is set to premiere at the Aldridge Youth Theatre, Noddy Park Road, Aldridge, Walsall WS9 8NQ on Saturday 11th April 2026. Tickets will be available at the door for £3 (cash only) and all profits will go to The James Brindley Foundation.
Alongside the film, Molly and crew-member Joseph Sherlock have produced a companion documentary that delves into the filmmaking process and features a powerful interview with James’ family. Through their perspective, the documentary explores the impact of knife crime and highlights the work of the foundation in tackling the issue. It will be screened following the film at its premiere, offering audiences a deeper, real-world context behind the story.
