About KIC Radio

KIC Radio is a youth-focused radio station providing young people with opportunities to have their voices heard, develop creative and digital skills, build confidence and gain real experience of the media and broadcasting industries.

Through radio, podcasts, interviews, music and community content, KIC Radio gives young people a platform to talk about the subjects that matter to them while developing practical skills that can support future education, training and employment.

Role Purpose

The Youth Radio Presenter will create and present engaging radio programmes for KIC Radio, with a particular focus on content that is relevant, entertaining and accessible to young people.

You will help plan shows, research topics, interview guests, introduce music and features, contribute ideas and engage listeners both on-air and through KIC Radio's digital platforms.

This is much more than simply talking on the radio. We are looking for someone who can connect with young audiences, bring energy and personality to programmes and help create a positive platform for youth voice.

Previous professional radio experience is not essential. Training and support can be provided. We are particularly interested in enthusiasm, reliability, creativity and a willingness to learn.

Key Responsibilities

Presenting & Broadcasting

• Present live and/or pre-recorded programmes for KIC Radio.
• Introduce music, features, guests and other programme content confidently and naturally.
• Communicate clearly and appropriately for KIC Radio's youth audience.
• Develop an engaging on-air personality while maintaining professional broadcasting standards.
• Work confidently from show plans, running orders and presenter notes.
• Respond appropriately when programmes do not go exactly to plan.

Programme Development

• Help develop original ideas for radio shows, podcasts, interviews and features.
• Research topics and stories that are interesting and relevant to young people.
• Prepare questions and conduct interviews with young people, community organisations, artists, professionals and other guests.
• Contribute to programme planning meetings.
• Help ensure programmes feature a diverse range of young voices, interests and experiences.

Music & Entertainment

• Help identify music and entertainment content appropriate for KIC Radio's audience.
• Introduce artists and tracks in an engaging way.
• Contribute ideas for music features, competitions, discussions and themed programmes.
• Keep up to date with music, youth culture, entertainment and issues affecting young people.

Digital Content

• Support the creation of short-form content from radio programmes for platforms such as social media.
• Participate in promotional photographs, videos and recordings where appropriate.
• Help promote upcoming programmes, guests and KIC Radio activities.
• Encourage listeners to interact with programmes in safe and appropriate ways.

Working With Young People

• Help create a welcoming environment where young people feel confident contributing their ideas and opinions.
• Encourage young people to participate in interviews, discussions, podcasts and radio programmes.
• Be positive, respectful and inclusive when working with young people from different backgrounds and with different abilities.
• Where appropriate, support young people who are getting their first experience of radio and broadcasting.

Studio & Production

Depending on experience and training, the presenter may also:

• Operate studio microphones and radio equipment.
• Use playout and broadcasting software.
• Record and edit interviews, features and podcasts.
• Create links, jingles, promos and other station content.
• Assist with outside broadcasts and community events.
• Follow KIC Radio's procedures for live and recorded programming.

Full technical training can be provided where required.
 

Person Specification

Essential

We are looking for someone who:

• Has a genuine interest in radio, music, podcasts, media or broadcasting.
• Is enthusiastic about working with and representing young people.
• Is confident communicating with others.
• Can bring personality, enthusiasm and authenticity to a radio programme.
• Has good spoken communication skills.
• Can listen to and respond to other people's views respectfully.
• Can generate interesting ideas for programmes and features.
• Is reliable, punctual and able to prepare properly for broadcasts.
• Is willing to learn new broadcasting and digital skills.
• Understands the importance of equality, diversity and inclusion.
• Can work effectively both independently and as part of the KIC Radio team.

Desirable

It would be useful, but not essential, to have:

• Previous experience of radio, podcasts, DJing, presenting or content creation.
• Experience interviewing people.
• Experience working or volunteering with young people.
• Knowledge of audio editing or radio automation software.
• Experience creating social media content.
• An understanding of microphones, mixers and studio equipment.
• Knowledge of current music, local culture and issues affecting young people.

We recognise that someone starting their career may not have had the opportunity to gain all of this experience. Potential, attitude and willingness to learn are equally important to us.
